Lily Collins’ Retro Hairstyle How-to

I’m loving this modern twist on a classic, Old Hollywood style Lily Collins donned this week. Says hairstylist Gregory Russell, “Lily’s dress inspired me to create a voluminous shiny retro look on her.” Here, how to get the look, in his words.

I started with her damp hair adding in Christophe Robin Instant Volumizing Mist generously to the roots for optimum volume. I then blew out her hair with lots of volume at the roots with my Harry Josh Round Brush. I set each section as I blew out with a duck bill clip. When complete, I allowed the hair to cool for about 5-10 minutes. I then used a 1.25” iron and curled with the tail over the barrel and away from the face. I set each curled section with a duckbill to cool. I sprayed the Klorane Dry Shampoo with Oat Milk – Natural Tint – For Brunette to Dark Hair to the roots while cooling. Once cooled, I removed the pins and sprayed each section through the length with the Klorane Dry Shampoo and brushed out with my Mason Pearson Brush. I then emulsified a pearl sized amount of OUAI Matte Pomade and ran my hands through the lengths of her hair for control, texture, and definition. I pulled up the sides and fastened tightly with a bobby pin. I then parted the hair through the mohawk and secured the front sections to the sides. I then brushed the rest of the hair back making sure to leave plenty of volume. Then I loosened it up by spraying OUAI Wave Spray through the lengths for a more modern texture. I finished the look using Sachajuan Hairspray for hold and shine.
