How To Create The Cheater’s Braid

Cheaters Braid Final 2

I’m loving this chic, simple ropey braid for summer evenings out, courtesy of stylist Alberto Luiz. It looks complicated, but utterly ISN’T. Here’s what you need to create it.

Ultra CHI Orbit 3-in-1 Tourmaline Ceramic Curler ($159.95, ulta.com)

BioSilk Shine On ($16.49, ulta.com) OR CHI Matte Wax ($15.96, loxabeauty.com)

Clear Silicone Band

Bobby Pins

image003Step 1. Create loose waves by wrapping sections of hair around a 1” curling wand.  Recommend: Ultra CHI Orbit 3-in-1 Tourmaline Ceramic Curler ($159.95, ulta.com).

Step 2Step 2. Divide front fringe into two sections.

Step 3Step 3.Create a simple shoelace knot: lay section 1 over section 2, bring the hair under and pull out through the loop.  Tighten until the knot reaches the eye line.

step 4Step 4. Repeat the pattern of looping hair over, under and through, adding a new section each time.  When braid is desired length, secure the tail with a clear silicone band.

step 5Step 5. Flip knots over and secure with pins to reveal the illusion of an intricate braid.

BioSilk Silk Therapy Shine On - $16.49 - ULTAStep 6 / Option 1.  For a perfectly prim and polished look, finish with a light shine spray like BioSilk Shine On ($16.49, ulta.com).

CHI Matte Wax - $15.96 - LoxaBeautyStep 6 / Option 2. For a too-cool-to-care look, deconstruct it a bit by tugging gently on the knots to reveal some wispy, flyaway pieces.  Add some rough texture by rubbing the entire braid with CHI Matte Wax ($15.96, loxabeauty.com).

What do you think of this braid effect? Yay or nay?
