Eyebrow tattoos are super popular now. They’re fun, fast to get, and most importantly, they last a long time. If you’re thinking about getting your first tattoo or just want to add to your collection, designing an eyebrow tattoo is the first step.
If you have an idea of what you want your finished look to be, it makes it much easier. However, that isn’t a pre-requisite as there are lots of great designs out there that are perfect if you need inspiration. Once you know what you want, getting your own custom tattoo is easy. Read on for everything you need to know about designing your own eyebrow tattoo.
Research Your Artist
There are lots of seemingly great deals and “free” tattoos out there, but you have to be careful! You want to make sure your artist is reputable and up to code when it comes to hygiene and safety, as well as their artistic ability.
You can check to see if they are a member of the Association of Professional Tattoo Artists (APT) which is a great place to start. If you live in a major city, there will be a ton of artists to choose from, but if you’re in a smaller town, it may be a little more difficult to find the right one.
Pick Your Location
There are a couple of different spots you can get your eyebrow tattoo. Many people choose to get it right above the brow, but it can also be in the middle, just below the brow, or even along the bottom of the brow. You may have seen eyebrow tattoos that are heavily shaded and dramatic, with three-dimensional shapes and imagery.
If you’re going for that look, definitely get it in the middle or below the brow. For something simpler, the top of the brow is a great spot. It’s more subtle and can be done in a color like black or grey that won’t change in color as much as a bright, colorful tattoo would.
Choose a Design
There are lots of different designs for eyebrow tattoos, and all of them are just as appropriate for men as they are for women. If you want something simple, you can choose from one of these or create your own variation. If you want something a little more complex, here are some ideas:
- A shape like a heart, star, or infinity symbol
- A pattern like paisley or a geometric design
- A picture or symbol like a flower, butterfly, or animal.
There are lots of great books that feature pictures of tattoos and ideas for designs, and they’re a great place to start if you’re feeling a bit stumped.
Decide on Color
As with any tattoo, color is an important factor. Since your brows are on your face, it may be a bit more difficult to hide a bright, colorful tattoo than it would be on your arm or leg. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t get a brightly colored tattoo.
It just means you need to be more careful with the color you choose and make sure it’s something you can wear when you need to! If you’re going for a brightly colored design, make sure your artist knows you’re going for that look and that it’s something you can easily incorporate into your daily wardrobe.
Tip: Go to a Tattoo Show Instead.
If you’re interested in getting a custom-designed eyebrow or tattoo, it’s worth checking out tattoo conventions or shows in your city. You can find out about shows in your area by checking online or in your local paper, and you can usually attend for free or at a very small cost.
If you’re looking to get a custom design, it can be worth going to a tattoo show where you can meet with a number of artists in one place and have them draw out different designs for you to choose from. There are lots of great artists at these conventions, so it’s definitely worth checking one out if you’re interested in getting a custom design.
How to Tattoo Your Own Eyebrow
You may be wondering if it’s actually safe to tattoo your own eyebrow. Technically yes, but we don’t recommend it. It’s much safer and more sanitary to visit a professional for your eyebrow tattoo. A lot of people choose to get their eyebrows tattooed by someone who does their eyebrows too, as that is their artistic area of expertise.
If you see a brow artist, there’s a good chance they can help you design the perfect tattoo, too. If you can’t get in with an eyebrow artist, you can still go to a tattoo parlor but you may need to go through a waiting period before you can get your eyebrow done. Your eyebrow tattoo will probably take about 30 minutes to an hour. After your eyebrow tattoo is done, you can expect to experience some swelling and redness, but after a few days, you’ll heal up just fine!
