Fictionary: Glamish

Fictionary is a column showcasing beauty-related words that don’t exist, but should.

When Butterfly Studio Salon owner Kattia Solano told me I had the face for a retro hairstyle the other day before creating a be-combed retro-wave set on me (more on that later), it was one of the best compliments I’ve ever received. Why? Because from a beauty prospective, I live life as if I were Amish–Glamish. I operate hair and makeupwise (90% of the time) as if I had a flux capacitor preferring ’50s and ’60s hair and makeup trends the way the Amish operate as if there were not ginormous advances in technology.

As such, like any gal worth her marcel-wave, Marilyn Monroe ranks high among my beauty inspiration. Her flaxen mane, her heavy lids, her serpentine brows still inauthentically replicated the world over. Her whispery voice. Her hourglass figure that overweight gals love to claim is the same size as theirs, pre the sizing revolution. But as Simon Doonan pointed out in Gay Men Don’t Get Fat, her clothing was actually teensy. He had the incredible job of going through her estate a few years ago. The 50th anniversary of the screen siren’s death is August 5 and to celebrate, Drybar introduces a new style for a limited time. Throughout the month of August, you can get “The Old Fashioned” at all Drybar locations. Sit back, relax, grab a glass of bubbly (on Drybar!) and enjoy some of Marilyn’s classics from FOREVER MARILYN: THE BLU-RAY COLLECTION (in stores now) streaming throughout the salon.

Check out this cute video they created in honor of the new ‘do.
