Carol’s Column: Red Carpet Revisited

By Carol (my mother)

I’ve got to acknowledge that when Kate Winslet cares to glam up, she certainly rises to the occasion, in this case, on Oscar Night. Looking eminently emulatable in an elegant, art deco-ish Yves St Laurent gown, she definitely hit her mark. Kudos to Kate.   Read more
Other stand-outs included: Helen Mirren looking lovely in a light, gauzy Badgely Mischka, Meryl Streep in a simple, sculptured white evening dress and Sarah Jessica Parker, whose sophisticated updo hairstyle drew attention to her eyes, which were made up to look strikingly prismatic.
That, plus her pale column of a gown (Chanel), with its carved, darkly sparkling bodice and dramatic neckline made her the epitome of chic. [Editor’s note: Alas, Carol and I do not agree about SJP. I found SJP’s bizarre neck strap situation triggered my must-be-from-another-life fear of being strangled to death. But to each her Oscar own!]

Anna Kendrick
looked fetching in delectably delicate ballet-pink chiffon–it was just right for her.

Oprah more than held her own in dark blue, a color, brightened and highlighted with sequins that Gabourey Sidibe also wore, to flattering effect.
Demi Moore didn’t disappoint in the knock-out department, wearing a nude-hued organza Atelier Versace.

Queen Latifah
reigned, as always, in her one-shouldered mauvey-pink gown, proving that nomenclature is destiny.

Lastly, Jennifer Lopez resonated with me. She looked softer and prettier, I thought, in a ruffled, feminine Armani gown that, though form-fitting, was far more subtly effective than the overly revealing numbers she has favored in the past.

There were other beautiful gowns on other stunning stars, but these were the ones that stood out for me.

Which were your favorites?
