Welcome to a new BBJ feature, Fictitious Fragrance Fans. Fragrance is one of the most difficult areas of beauty to discuss and I find myself trying to convey a scent to you, more often than not, by the pop culture character it embodies to me. So why not make it a thing?
So, just as cotton is the fabric of our lives, for my brother Ethan and me, PBS’ Mystery! opening sequence is on the soundtrack of our lives. I just love the Edward Gorey opening.
I used to want to be FANCY like that damsel in distress in the blue dress waving her scarf, all DEVA that part of the building she was lying on crumbled off. Why she lay up there and moaned about it, I still don’t understand. Doll? Just get up. That’s all. But she DOES have a certain sensibility that requires a corresponding eau de quiet despair from which she needs saving, and for that, I have the perf perfume to recommend.
Exhibit A: My new fragrance fave, Lisa Hoffman‘s Japanese Agarwood Fragrance Set ($95). This “flight” of four fragrances seems like just the kind of fancy scent the wailing woman on the wall would rock in utter sophistication whilst awaiting her knight in shining armor to rescue her from that precipice of near-doom. With its mix of Italian Bergamot, Spiced Ginger Accord, and Warm Amber in slightly varied compositions, it could easily take her from her fair maiden breakfast all the way through her evening-on-the-fainting couch festivities. The scent was even a 2009 FIFI Award finalist. The set contains four scent iterations: one for morning, one for day time, one for evening, and one for bedtime. Best of all: You won’t lose any of the petite roll-ons because they come in a gorgeous leather envelope.
But should any go missing, you can be sure it was that wiley Miss Scarlett (with the revolver) in the study.
