Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at TIBI

Gucci Westman chatting with Amy Smilovic, TIBI designer backstage.

Okay, so I’ll just SAY it. TIBI is my fave show on which to report at NYFW. For your ref, here’s last season’s post. This time, I was ESPECIALLY enthused to interview the famed Gucci Westman (pictured, left). Last season, I interviewed her at Miss Sixty, which I also reported on today (stay tuned for a post on that.)

The inspiration: Hong Kong. Amy Smilovic lived there for a spell during the late 90s when her husband was offered a job there. The look was an Asian tomato-red-stained lip and pink cheeks. For lips specifically, Gucci created a spring red infused with a hint of coral. I was so over my spring/summer clothes until I heard the words “spring red.” I feel like I need to wear something in spring red IMMED if not sooner. Anyway, to do this, she combined two shades of lipstick: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice and Kiss me Coral. The former was applied with her fingertips like a stain, while the second was dabbed on afterward. The eyes were toned down with a sheer wash of dove grey shadow. She used Revlon Illuminance Creme Shadow in Twilight and Not Just Nudes to achieve a minimal eye with a bit of depth. Gucci finished the look with Revlon 3D Extreme Mascara in Black on the top and bottom lashes to infuse a bit of drama. Revlon Cream Blush in Berry Flirtatious and First Blush was applied with the goal of conveying flirtation on the cheekbone and drawn out to the eye area. Skin was kept even and smooth; Gucci simply matched the models’ skin tones. This was my fave makeup look yet. Check it:

Fashion Week: BBJ Ventures Backstage at Vena Cava

Behold the cosmetics table at Vena Cava!

I interviewed Tina Turnbow, (pictured, left) celebrity makeup artist, for the second time today backstage at Vena Cava, held at the Chelsea Art Museum. This time, Tina was working with Stila. The inspiration? Gothic Egyptian. Tina’s always had an affinity for an Egyptian aesthetic, as do I. “It’s about mixing warm and cool, metallic and matte,” Dame Mix-a-Lot Tina informed me. The look was achieved with Stila Sheer Color Tinted Moisturizer, Perfecting Concealer, Pressed Powder, and Stila Sun #1.

How to Achieve Cory Kennedy Hair

After reporting backstage at Vena Cava today (stay tuned for a post on that!), I headed back uptown to Cellar Bar at the Bryant Park Hotel to meet Cory Kennedy, blogger extraordinaire and new face of Sebastian hair products. Don’t you love the Brigitte Bardot inspiration of the advertorial pic on the left? She was super sweet in person and has mythical hair. As in, I asked her how she achieves her nonchalant waves that are perfectly straight at the crown (you know, something that for me, requires the use of at least six products and several heat tools) and she said she simply scrunches in Sebastian Whipped Creme ($19) and AIR DRIES. It yields soft, non-crunchy, undulations of locks. Can you even? (I can’t.)

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Abaete

Behold the Stila makeup table!

Shawn Peltier, (pictured, left) Stila makeup artist, gave me the scoop on the inspiration for the look. “Feminine, definitely,” Shawn reported. “Frilly and frivolous BUT with a hint of naughty.” Abaete’s Spring 2009 line conveys the theme of reason vs. emotion.

The light/dark dichotomy reigns supreme at this show (much like it does in LOST!) and I’m into it. As another makeup artist there, Viviane Martin (pictured, left) told me, “it’s about the good girl you are… and the bad girl you want to be.”

Fashion Week: BBJ Backstage at Charlotte Ronson

Gals, I’m so tired I’m TWITCHING, but it’s for the best reason: FASHION WEEK. My sched is packed, my feet hurt, but I got a hair touch-up by Massimo at the Molton Brown suite organized by Total Beauty at the Bryant Park Hotel today, so all’s right in the world. Let’s discuss the phenomness that went on at Charlotte Ronson backstage today, mmkay? celebrity makeup artist Tina Turnbow told me the inspiration is “Madonna Meets Grunge.” To me, it seemed very Rayanne of My So-called Life fame. The effect was undone, but done. “Kind of like slept-in makeup,” Tina told me. “It works its way into the face and becomes part of you.” Using Tarte cosmetics, Tina defined the look with a “Madonna brow” (attained with Tarte Toolbox Brow Know-how Eyebrow Kit) and contour on the cheeks, achieved with darker powders. The result is a matte graduation of definition. Tina then dusted on a bit a bit of Tarte Mineral Powder Bronzer for warmth. Skin was primed with strategically-applied The Eraser 4-in-1 Concealer (a fave of mine for its pigmentation and high color payoff) and a bit of Provacateur Pressed Mineral Powder SPF 8.

A Parnership that Hits the Bullseye: L’Oreal and Target

L’Oréal Paris Infallible™ Never Fail Lipcolour in Target Red ($9.99): I have found THE red. I put this on circa midnight after attending‘s Fashion Week Kick Off party last night and found that with my gorgely-curled hair (thanks, Sade of the Ted Gibson Salon!) and NO OTHER MAKEUP (I’d washed it off by this point), I was channeling THE Betty Draper. Without question. This highly-pigmented true red is PERFECT for blondes and even features a patented, transfer-proof formula. It’s perfect with an all-grey or black outfit and minimal jewelry.
