Five Rules For Life: Grace Atwood Of ‘The Stripe’

I’ve known Grace for years, first when she worked for Coty, then when she was at BaubleBar, and now she’s killing it with her relaunched site, The Stripe. Her social media accounts feature a melange of fashion, accessories, and beauty tips with some cameos from her super sassy puffy cat, Tyrion. She’s introduced me to the wonder of Coqui Coqui fragrances, the virtues of Mexican boho styling, JLo bronzing tips and so much more, so I tapped her for her 5 Rules For Life. Here they are, in Grace’s words.

1. Work hard and be nice to people.
This is the most simple advice but so true, and in my opinion the number one way to be successful. I always say that if you are nice but stupid, you can still get pretty far in life. I mean, ideally smart and nice is best, but if you are rude and abrasive, you will get nowhere in life. So put your head down, work your ass off, and be a nice person. It isn’t that difficult.
2. The law of attraction is REAL.
If you think positive thoughts and really believe that good things will come your way… they will. The key is really, truly believing it. You can’t fake a positive attitude.
3. Oysters + rosé do not make a proper dinner, even if you have a dozen of them.
You may feel full, just trust me on this one (how am I in my thirties and only realizing this!?)
4. It’s a sad one, but if you want to look good, you have to eat right and exercise every day.
There aren’t any short cuts. As you get older, your metabolism gets more and more sluggish. There are a million fad diets out there, but at the end of the day to see long-term results you have to eat clean and MOVE.
5. Always put yourself first.
It’s like that sign in airplanes… you have to put your own oxygen mask on before helping anyone else. If you aren’t taking good care of yourself, you won’t be able to take care of others. I’m not saying to be totally selfish (please review rule #1), but it’s important to set boundaries and say NO when necessary.
Bonus Rules:
This is for all the interns and assistants out there. Google it!
Don’t bother your boss with silly questions… if you can google it or figure out how to do something on your own without asking her, google it!
When texting a boy, if there is more blue (texts from you) than gray (texts from him), STOP.
Put your phone down and let him talk. (Or delete his number.) My friend Alex taught me this one… I have been a long-winded texter in the past. No sea of blue.
Always wear a slip under your summer dresses.
My first roommate and best friend got me hooked on this. They’ll prevent static, keep a silky dress from sticking to you, and hide sweat.
A good tailor will change your life.
Forever 21 can look like Saks 5th Avenue if it fits properly. Along those lines, invest your money in great shoes and bags.
Moisturize at night and wear sunscreen every day.
You will be glad you did.
Thanks, Grace! Stay tuned for more 5 Rules For Life installments.

“Five Rules” is a series on Rouge18 in which I ask others to share their five rules for life about anything and everything. You can learn a lot about a person by reading which five things govern their actions, no?
