Five Rules For Life: Angela Jia Kim, Savor Spa Owner

Intro By Julia Casella
“The quietness and the proud look of it; nothing very bad could happen to you there”
– Breakfast at Tiffany’s
Just like Holly Golightly had Tiffany’s, I have Savor Spa. Located in the West Village at 327 West 11th Street, this little gem is home to all things green, good and gorgeous—starting with its founder Angela Jia Kim. While touring as a professional concert pianist she experienced a bad reaction to a “natural” lotion she applied pre-concert. This inspired her to create her own skincare line, OM Aroma & Co, which is free of parabens, formaldehyde, sulfates, and other toxic chemical fillers. She is also the founder of the women entrepreneur community Savor the Success and decided to fuse her two lifestyle companies to create the spa.  With wonderfully shaped pedicure chairs (like the ones at BG Restaurant) and every detail so meticulously and carefully thought over, you do really feel like nothing very bad can happen to you there.  We met last week and her story and unbelievable energy and passion inspired me to ask her for her Five Rules. Here they are, in her words.

1. Hang with people who light you up.
Never underestimate the power of positivity vs. toxicity. Be around people who make you feel good, inspire you to live your potential, and ignite your passion. If you remove yourself from toxic relationships, you will see yourself fly in the personal and professional department.
2. Give, give, get.
You never know what you get until you give. By having a generous spirit, sharing loving wisdom with others, and volunteering time to a great cause, I have received ten-fold back. It has helped me to build successful businesses and have fulfilling friendships. Investing in others makes you feel happy and rich.
3. Work smarter, not harder.
My secret weapon to owning three businesses, having a family, and a happy life? Planning. If you don’t plan your day, it’s easy to get caught up in the tiny details that bog you down. Work out the most important things to accomplish and get those things done first. You will get further in your career and you’ll have more time to enjoy life.
4. Create your perfect day once a week.
Every Sunday, I like to create my “perfect day”. It’s a time to replenish and renew whether it’s “putzing” around all morning with my preschool-aged daughter, eating Dim Sum, candlelight baths, a massage, a romantic dinner with my husband, or a mani/pedi.
5. Organize your day around one thing to savor.
With the whirlwind of crazy busy days, it’s important to remember why we work so hard… it’s hopefully to create moments to savor. It can be as little as having a sundae date with a friend or doing yoga… all the way to having a decadent meal with your significant other.
Make sure to leave behind your iPhone and be completely present and grateful for all the  good things in life. Take time and savor.

Join Angela Jia Kim and Gilt founder, Alexis Maybank, Stella & Founder, Jessica Herrin, and 500 other women for Women Entrepreneurs Rock the World on May 8-9, 2 days of inspiration to live your WILDEST DREAMS.
